Attahiru Jega:‘INEC Chairman should continue in office,’ Senator-elect says

Jega’s tenure as INEC Chairman ends in June 2015 and he has said that he’s not interested in a renewal.
The Senator-elect for the Bauchi North Senatorial District, has pleaded with the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Attahiru Jega not to vacate the office just yet.
Jega’s tenure ends in June 2015 and he has said that he’s not interested in a renewal.
However, Senator-elect, Suleiman Nazif has urged Jega to continue in office so that he can perfect Nigeria’s electoral process.
Nazif made the call on Thursday, April 17, 2015, during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
“Jega has proven to Nigerians that he is a hero, he has done the right thing, and Jega means very well and Jega should be given an opportunity to improve upon the electoral process,” Nazif said.
“The process needs to be improved upon, Jega must be commended, loudest ovation should be given to Jega for merely bringing this card readers which was partly responsible for giving the opposition victory because it checked the ruling party’s excess. Jega has done well and we believe he should be given more time to improve upon the electoral process,” he added.
A former Comptroller-General of Customs, Ahmed Aliyu, also urged Jega to stay on in office.
“I wish Jega will overlook other things and continue in office so that he will perfect the electoral process he had introduced, especially the card reader machine. He should perfect it in way that the machines could be used in courts and tribunals,” he said.
Jega has been widely praised for the conduct of the 2015 general elections and received a letter of commendation from US President, Barack Obama.
