President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari has reportedly barred African Independent Television (AIT) from covering his activities.
Members of Buhari’s security detail were said to have, on April 27, 2015, prevented AIT correspondent, Tinabeso Bebei from covering the President-elect’s functions.
According to Vanguard, the order was given to Bebei at the Defence House in Abuja where the crew planned to cover the Cuban ambassador’s visit to Buhari.
The supposed bar has reportedly been confirmed by the President-elect’s media aide, Garba Shehu.
“AIT has been asked to stay aside based on security and family concerns. In addition, Buhari has decided that they will have to resolve some issues relating to issues of standard and ethics,” Shehu said.
“We will be talking with them to try and resolve the matter, but for now the station has been asked to stay aside, because like I said there are some family and security concerns. They have been asked to step down their coverage until we resolve the matter with them on ethics and standards,” he added.
The ban is believed to be connected to AIT’s hate campaign against Buhari while he was still in the contest for the Presidency.
The Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) also ran some anti-Buhari documentaries but was not included in the ban.
Both stations have been indicted by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) for unethical practices.
