One Killed as Protests Rock Ekiti Towns Over Fayose’s Impeachment

One person, identified as Modupe Olaiya , was killed on Tuesday in Efon Alaaye, Efon Local Government Area of Ekiti State as members of the Peoples Democratic Party held violent protests against attempts by 19 All Progressives Congress lawmakers to impeach Governor Ayodele Fayose.
Eyewitnesses confirmed to newsmen in Ado Ekiti that the APC lawmakers were coming from Osun State and had rammed into the barricade mounted by the protesters at Ita Ore , a border town betweenm Ekiti and Osun States.
The victim was said to have sustained gunshot injury as the police fired several shots to scare the protesters, who had already taken over the Ado-Ita Ore-Ilesa road.
However, efforts made by the APC lawmakers to hold sitting was aborted, as soldiers stationed at Ita Ore were said to have prevented their convoy from entering the State.
As the protest raged, a Hilux van marked AA 363 YEK , conveying gun-m wielding thugs to the Assembly collided with a police patrol van at Secretariat road in Ado Ekiti , where three people were said to have been arrested among the goons.
Aside from Ado Ekiti, protests were also held in major towns like: Efon Alaaye, Iworoko, Aisegba, Ikere, Ise, Ogotun Igbemo, against the attempt to boot Fayose out of office, thereby preventing human and vehicular movements for several hours as all major roads leading to Ekiti were blocked.
Some SSS 3 students , who were presently sitting for the West African Examinations Council outside the capital city could not get vehicles to convey them at the park, as party thugs told them to return home.
The protesters, who had massed at major spots within Ado Ekiti Metropolis like: Ajilosun, Ijigbo, Secretariat Road, Okesa, Ojumose, and old garage as early as 6.30am, barricaded the roads with planks and vehicles and made bonfires , which hindered human and vehicular movements for several hours .
Civil Servants and traders, who had reported to their places of work, had to return home in fear, while the commercial motorcyclists had a bad day as their businesses were obstructed by the preponderance of the barricades that were placed on the roads by the protesters.
Sequel to the violent nature of the protests, the Police Commissioner, Mr Taiwo Lakanu had deployed Armoured Personnel Carriers and personnel to all the affected towns and troubled spots, while the House of Assembly complex was sealed off by heavily armed policemen, who kept vigil on the place.
What actually fuelled the violent protests was the rumour that the APC lawmakers, led by the embattled Speaker, Hon Adewale Omirin were allegedly planning to hold a sitting where the issue of the notice ofm gross misconduct forwarded to the Governor last Friday will be discussed.
